My Granny O passed away last Sunday...my last grandparent. As I think of them, I will share some fond memories of her.

As a kid we used to go the the lake on the weekends...the whole family. We would get to her house really early in the morning. The house would smell like fried chicken, boiled peanuts, and pound cake! To this day, everytime I eat a boiled peanut, I think of this.

We decided to rip up the carpet and go for it with some really nice laminate flooring. This is some really great, solid stuff, and it looks so great! It's hard work, but we are having a ball putting it down. We make quite the team! Here's one of sort of a 'before' of the breakfast nook.
I tried to find a 'before' shot. Here's a little bit of one.

Geez. It's been almost a year since I last posted. Lots of stuff happened. Hubby got laid off and it took 8 months for him to find another job. He has a job he enjoys, with a much more improved work environment. So, that's good. My youngest made the Varsity Cheerleading squad at her highschool, so that has made for a really fun year! Lots of football games, then on to 2 competitions. We had a blast watching her. Next year will be her senior year, so we are looking to some fun stuff with that. A major milestone!

Our oldest and her hubby built a new home. It's really nice and they are enjoying decorating it. Christmas was fun for them getting to hang lights on their new home. We made her a really pretty wreath for her door, too!.

I caught up with my friends from elementary school. We used to play Barbies all the time. What a treat it was to reunite and see them again! The 'Divas of DeCarlo Lane'! LOL!

We celebrated our 30th anniversary, our youngest turned Sweet 16, Highschool Homecoming, Cheerleading competitions, holidays, my youngest found a new boyfriend, my baby sister turned 40! My goodness what a year it has been! Looking back, seeing how God has blessed our family this past year, through all the uncertainty...I know He'll continue to watch and care for us through 2010, too. He's been faithful.

Still going strong! Went to Ruth's Chris Steakhouse to celebrate. Allen wore his tux, needless to say, we got a few looks! But hey, why do we not use the good china and silver more often? We need to celebrate our lives more! So...we did! So bust out the tuxes and bling and enjoy!

This Weekend's Project

We made a wedding cake for a friend of my husband, who got married on Saturday.
So, how long does something like this take, you may ask?
Baking: 5 hours
Mixing Frosting: About an hour and half to make all the batches needed - this one needed 3
Crumb Coat layer: About an hour - crumb coat lock in the cake crumbs to keep them from getting into the final frosting layer. A crumb coat is a MUST for a chocolate cake...which this was.
Final Coat: About 2 hours, including waiting for the frosting to set up.
Smoothing: The hand-smoothing process, using waxed paper, takes another hour and a half or so.
Applying Decorations: It depends on how ornate it is. This one was fairly simple, so it took about an hour to put all the trim on and arrange the flowers.
Total Project time: 12 hours

Okay, so the guys on Ace of Cakes do it faster...I guess, but then I'm not a pro. LOL!

Then...how long does it take to cut it up and eat it??? About 20 minutes! LOL! (I always hate that part!)

Actually, this was a game we played at a party at church. Each table had to race to blow up balloons, then fill each leg of a pair of panty hose. The end result was crazy looking reindeer antlers that must be place on a team member's head. The first team to accomplish this highly challenging feat, was the winner! We were laughing so hard at everyone, we almost never got calmed back down to move on to the next game!

I took these Monday night, thinking it was the moon and just two bright little stars! On the weather last night, John Gaughn talked about them and explained what they were...Planets! Remember this picture on election day! Let's all remember this on election day. What a slap in the face to those of you who have family serving in the military! I don't care for Hillary, but at least she shows respect for the country she lives in! I had heard about this but a picture is definitely worth 1000 words! God save us!!!

If Barrack Obama does not love our country enough to even willingly and publicly show his allegiance and loyalty to the United States of America, he is definitely not fit to run it!

I sing with a group of ladies at our church. We have been together for about 4 years now, I think. We have had some changes - people moving away and such - but we are still at it. I put a recording of one of our favorite songs. The link is over to the right. Enjoy!

We went to see our friend's new house, and I was able to do some photo-bugging...it's been a while. It is really beautiful out there, and the neighborhood is so nice and peaceful. There is a model home next door to them I really wish I could buy! I think it just might be worth the extra 20 minutes of a drive for the enjoyment of the peace and really beautiful scenery out there.

My Thanksgiving 'Pretty'

Okay guys, Hobby Lobby totally rocks! They had so many cute Thanksgiving knick knacks, some with inspirational sayings on them (which is pretty much the only craft store you will find stuff like that!). So this is the centerpiece I put together for my diningroom table. I think it turned out really nice!

Playing under the direction of Mr. Camp Kirkland...from my vantage point. :-)

This was during the rehearsal for the inaugural concert of the Jacksonville Praise Orchestra. These are musicians from 12 different churches around town whose orchestra directors got together to form the Jacksonville Instrumental Directors Association. There will be 2 or 3 concerts a year. The next one will be held sometime the first quarter of next year.

Our home is located on a retention pond. I was amazed at the amount of water this storm has dropped on our area. Here's a little visual comparison for you!

There is another house next to this one that has a bulkhead. Normally you see about 3 to 4 feet of it above the level of the water. Look at it now!

Sky Watch - Mall Edition!

This is pretty much the coolest Mall I've ever seen...so far :-) The entire 'mall' part was covered completely by skylights. There is a carousel in the food court area, glass elevators and a giant American flag. It was pretty amazing.

Took a little trip a couple of weeks ago. As with all vacations it was way too short!

We followed behind the fine folks in this vehicle (my parents!) for 13 hours! Since I got back it has become obvious I ate entirely too much!

Auntie's cute little house in Rickman, TN. She has a front porch where we watched and photographed hummingbirds! That is pretty cool!

There were 4 of them fighting over the feeder at once! Who needs TV, right?

My auntie, the banker. She even has her own room! :-) She looks like she knows what she doing! LOL!

Cumberland National Park. They have an all you can eat buffet - pretty darn good food! (BUFFET = Big Ugly Fat Folks Eating Together) That will help you curb your appetite at those places, huh? LOL!

...to a newer model year. When the tires wear out, it's time for a new car. Right?

Our 2001 Lexus RX300 has served us well, but now I'm hooked on them! I was dreading the day we would have to figure out how to get another one, but fortunately it all worked out.

Below, the new 'Baby Blue'...2004 Lexus RX330 - Breakwater Blue Metallic. It's the light blue, light grey interior. The new ones are a bit beyond the old budget, but with my 'secret weapon' (he knows who he is!) we were able to get into this little baby!

Way better turn radius than the earlier model (that was my only complaint with the last one), dual AC controls, 6-disc CD changer - but front load instead of inside the glove compartment, reclining back seats that also move forward and back, both front seats are heated, the windshield has a rain sensor, so when it starts to rain they automatically turn on, and the headlights adjust also - somehow. The manual is over 400 pages - haven't had time to read it yet so I'm sure we will discover some other fun stuff.

Time to Catch Up, and Skywatch Friday

So where have I been, you may ask? I did a really stupid thing this year...started a new job AND taking 2 classes at our local junior college while trying to keep pace with everything else in life...Dumb Dumb Dumb! But, alas, classes are over - one a success and unfortunately one a failure. It was Algebra...what else do I need to say?

But, I'm back now! Hopefully, I'll be able to start keeping up with my blog again.

Here are a few shots from the 'surprise' anniversary trip my hubby put together for our 29th! This is Elizabeth Point Lodge in Fernandina Beach. I HIGHLY recommend this place!

It has a fabulous back porch on the ocean! It was gorgeous, and the weather was perfect!

This was the view out of our room. It was wonderful...we kept the windows open all night and slept to the sound of the waves rolling in. It was very peaceful and relaxing.

He rented us a sporty little convertible, and boy was it ever 'top down' weather!

Another surprise he arranged for me was a morning at the spa! Swedish Massage, Pedicure, Manicure and a hair cut and style. He definitely got the 'Hubby of the Year' vote from that ladies at the salon! Then what could have topped it off better than dinner at the 4750 Cafe at the Ritz-Carlton Amelia Island?

Well, okay how about a spectacular sunrise? How's that for a Skywatch?

and...a dozen red roses waiting for me when I returned to work!

Okay hunny, this was only the 29th! Next year is the big 3-0...Hmmmm....

One day, when I grow up...

I want to be a big, shiny black Grand Piano!

It finally arrived! After waiting most of the day for the truck to arrive, Parsley's Piano Service pulled into the driveway and unloaded this beautiful instrument into my livingroom! Okay folks, this is not just a 'PSO' (piano-shaped object), not a mere piece of furniture, although it is quite striking, don't you think? This is a rich-toned fabulous sounding instrument with a fine and responsive touch! This thing will definitely talk!

The first piano in this blog is a lovely Baldwin console model - a 125th anniversary edition - that I originally purchased in 1987. It has served me well - lots of memories were made on that instrument. Hopefully, it will go to a little girl or boy somewhere who is just starting on their journey of discovering the joy of music.

The experience of getting this Grand, after dreaming of it for so many years but never believing it could really happen, ranks in the top 5 greatest moments of my life! I captured the whole delivery and setup process in pictures. Did you really expect anything less! Paid In Full

Your Salvation has been purchased, your sins forgiven...it's in your court. All you need to do is receive this free gift.

Step 1 - Admit that you are a sinner. Romans 3:23 "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
We all have sin in our hearts. We all were born with sin. We were born under the power of sin's control.

Step 2 - Understand that you deserve death (or separation from God) for your sin.

Romans 6:23a "...The wages of sin is death..."
Not speaking here of physical death, but a spiritual death - or eternal separation from God. Since God created us specifically to have a relationship with Him, this is definitely not His purpose for us - but we do have a choice.

Step 3 - Ask God to forgive you and save you.

Romans 6:23b "...But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."
Salvation is a free gift from God to you! You can't earn this gift by your own works. The only thing you have to do is reach out and receive it.

Step 4 - Give your life to God...His love is what saves you -- not religion, or church membership. God loves you!

Romans 5:8, "God demonstrates His own love for us, in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us!"
When Jesus died on the cross He paid the price for all sin! All we have to do is believe in Him and what He has done for us, then trust Him to guide and direct our lives.

Step 5 - Just ask, He'll take care of the rest!

Romans 10:13 "Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved!"

Step 6 - If you know that God is knocking on your heart's door, ask Him to come into your heart. Romans 10:9,10 "...If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead, you shall be saved; for with the heart man believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation."

Jesus said, Revelation 3:20a "Behold I stand at the door and knock, if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him..."
- Is Jesus knocking on your heart's door? He says He is!

Step 7 - Get involved in a Bible teaching, Bible believing church. Let them know your decision! What better time of the year to begin your new life!

Am I dreaming?

A life-long dream come true! Since I began playing piano (we won't say how long ago) I've always dreamed of one day having a Grand. Today, we took the plunge, aided by a fabulous sale of conservatory pianos from the local University! I've been putting it off for quite a while, but finally decided that I needed to do it before I get old and arthritic! It will be delivered to my home later next week. Of course, that will be recorded in photographs that I will happily add to my blog!

Our youngest daughter's boyfriend is in 9th grade and on both the Jr. Varsity AND the Varsity teams. Quite a feat for a freshman! The Jr. Varsity team had a game this afternoon. This was at the baseball field at the high school my husband and I both graduated from. I have to say that today was first time I ever attended a baseball game there...after all these years!

Well, it's almost that time again. We are now in preparation for our 2008 Easter Pageant. This year, it's 'Alone on the Altar'. We did this one probably 10 or so years ago, before the move to our new location. Wish I had photos of it to post, but alas, there were not as many photobugs in the family around at that time, plus - no digital capabilities back then. We've come a long way in 10 years!

Well, been settling into a new position at work, which has proven to be a bit of a challenge. I knew it would. It is beginning to settle in just a bit and for that I am very happy. I have also been attending classes at our local community college.

So, between that and our church activities, Upward Cheerleading, etc., I have been a bit swamped. Hopefully, in the next couple of weeks, things will level out a bit, and I can get back to doing some more blogging.

We woke up to a brisk 4 degrees...yup, that's "4". Windchills up on the mountain were predicted to be 2 to 3 degrees below zero. I think the high up there was around 11 degrees. My darling daughter had to forego skiing today due to a nasty cough, cold and fever she developed yesterday. She was bummed, so was I. Dad and I tagged teamed her care. He skiied this morning, I went back late this afternoon for the second shift. Dad and I are both pretty much beginners...this was our second trip. He, under the very able coaching of my sister - the veteran - promoted himself from beginner to a "Blue" slope master. (For those who are unfamiliar with 'ski' lingo - "Green" is easier, "Blue" is more difficult, and "Black" and "Double Black" is difficult to 'are you nuts?'.)

Sister was out on the slopes non-stop yesterday, and today. She was ready to go back to a little slower pace by the time I got to get out there and give it a 'go' again. That worked out well for me. So, I too, under her very able instruction, went from 'Beginner' to master a "Blue" slope. (What I won't say is that she didn't tell me we were on the "Blues" until after we were down and changed to go back to the hotel!) It was SO AWESOME! I was ready to do it again, but we didn't have enough time. Oh well, we'll have to wait until next year.

This is the view out of the window of my room. We are right across from the Miami Airport. You would think that it would be noisy, but believe or not, I haven't heard any noise from aircraft. Must be the way they have the flight paths laid out.

This is looking out the same window toward the right. The shorter of the 3 buildings you see off in the distance to the right is where our offices are located. I have to remember to take a picture of the entrance when we go in tomorrow. It's really pretty!

Dinner tonight was sushi at a Japanese steakhouse in the Dophin Mall. I thought this was really pretty. This is a platform in a common area where bands play, evidently. It was sort of like a stage.

This one is for Kristi (my boss). This is her favorite store in the whole world! It has a giant aquarium in the middle of it. (Duh, should have taken a picture!) There were a couple of sharks in it, and tarpon and a few other species that I haven't got a clue what they were. It was really cool.

Making Music

These are some of my best friends. We are all part of a singing group that was formed, if I remember correctly, about 4 years ago. We actually started with only four, two of which have moved away. Three of the four of the original group were orchestra members, who also enjoyed singing. So, at the urging of, Carla, our original leader, we gathered together to learn a song or two for Christmas. It just kept going from there.

So, with only 2 of the original members - myself and Dee - both altos - we keep moving on. Now we are six strong, two at each part - Donna & Erin @ 1st soprano, Melissa & Erin @ 2nd soprano, and them Dee & myself @ alto. We have been through several transitions over the years, but still have a nice, tight harmony. We kind of enjoy the 'Point Of Grace' type of sound, and while we aren't quite as 'polished' as they, that is the closest comparison I can think of as to our particular style. We do various styles of music, from Gospel to Praise & Worship.

Unity of Faith

It's so nice being part of a group of ladies who stay so committed and enjoy making music together to glorify our Lord, and bring our church family into an attitude of worship.

We found out today that our original leader, Carla, lost her mother this morning to a possible heart attack. Please keep she and her family in your prayers through the difficult days to come. It's hard to lose a loved one, but losing someone during this time of the year is especially hard.

A Gift

I'm a pianist. I love all things piano. I love grand pianos especially. They are just one of the most elegant of all the instruments. I collect piano ornament, figurines, music boxes, etc. My friend, Joy, gave me this one to add to my collection. I LOVE it! I have a small tabletop tree that I have been putting my piano ornaments on, but I think I'm going to have to get a larger one! I'll post a picture of it once I get it set up.

I don't have a real grand...yet. Maybe one day!

This was taken earlier this year at our church's Upwards Basketball awards night. Tim was the guest speaker for the evening. It is so refreshing to have such an extraordinary role model for our kids. He is truly a fine young man who really loves the Lord and gives HIm praise for the talent that the has been given, and uses it for His purpose and His glory. One thing he said that night that really stuck out in my mind was that as much as he loves playing football, and as exciting as it was to win an SEC Championship, that is not what counts at the end of the day. What really matters is how you live your life for Jesus, and what you do for Him.

Congratulations to Tim and to his Mom and Dad, to whom he given reason to be extremely proud!

Keep it up, Tim! Go Gators!

First off...hubby was able to locate the additional red and green icicle lights that we needed to finish the eaves. So...as promised...here are some pics!

The smallest tree in this group of 3 seems to have a problem. We hope it's just a fuse blown in the plug, which can be easily replaced. It was dark when he finished, so we'll have to check into it when it's light outside.

Then...I got a promotion at work. Monday was my first day in the new position. My former team surprised me with a cake, flowers, plant and card. It was really nice! It was a very hard decision for me to choose to leave, but in the end, I think it will be a good move for me.

(Glad I took my camera to work with me today!)

I don't remember what this one was...probably a Yamaha. It was at the concert hall where my soon to be son-in-law's Senior Recital was held. He's a horn player, but this...yes this...was what accompanied him. (If only my livingroom were big enough!)

Baldwin is actually my brand of choice. I do have plans...not one quite this big, but big enough, at least a 6 footer! The photos in the mosaic contain pictures of pianos at a music store owners expo my brother attended a year or so ago. He took them because he knew I'd enjoy them. He was able to find me not only some Baldwins, but a really nice 9 foot concert Mason & Hamlin. I played one of those at my last piano recital. It was a very big deal! They did have a Steinway available, but it had been regulated and adjusted for this guy that played there a lot. It was a bit too hard to play for we younger, and less experienced, prodogies. If I remember correctly, I played a Tchaikovsky piano concerto. I have a photograph of me sitting at it some where. I'll have to find it and scan it in so I can publish it one day. I was in High School at that time.

I currently play a 40+ year old Yamaha 7'8" instrument at my church. I have been playing church music for 30 something years - the past 13 at the church I currently attend, where I grew up, and the years prior to that at the various churches where my husband served as Music Minister. I dabble at the organ as well, but am not quite as proficient with that instrument, but can fill the bench in a pinch.

It's my heartbeat. It's that thing I do that I love.

Some sky...plus some Pacific Ocean, and a little St. Regis Resort thrown in to add some pizzazz! This is in Monarch Beach, CA, where I went on business this past May. The first few days we experienced what they called 'June Gloom', which evidently arrived just a little bit early. It was grey, overcast and misty - due to a fog that rolls in off the ocean. It burned off some in the afternoons, but not entirely. Wouldn't you know it? This is what it looked like the day we had to leave! Bummer! This was an amazing place! I would SO go back!

This is a ground-cover type of plant that is growing wild in the grass just off my deck. I'm not sure where it came from, but it appears every now and then. Pushing itself through the grass (and other varieties of green stuff) that is already there, it bursts out with these vibrant purple blossoms.

If you saw this entire rose bush, you would not believe it that such a lovely blossom could possibly appear on it. I have neglected it so, but Someone Else is still making something beautiful out of it - in spite of me.

If He cares enough to do this with a neglected rosebush, just imagine what He wants to do with something He loves so much more than foliage!

Experimenting with flash

My brother has been telling me how the 'off-camera' flash setup gives a much more natural look than direct flash. (Well, if you have to have flash at all...I prefer natural light when I can get it.) But anyway, we had a project tonight at church, to shoot photos of all the choir kids. We didn't get to use the lighting he had set up with my camera, because we got a late start. But, afterwards, we took a couple of test shots for comparison. I don't often get to play with all the 'extra' stuff like that. This was the result.

This one was taken with my Canon 30D, 70-200 2.8L, 430EX flash unit (on camera).

This one, same gear, but with the off-camera lights triggered by an on-camera remote. (I need to get me one of those!)

Overall, shot #1 is not bad, but the shot #2 below is

#1 a better shot of my brother,
#2 much more dramatic lighting.

Jacksonville Sea & Sky Spectacular...may favorite part...The Blue Angels!

We spent this afternoon watching the Blue Angels, precision flight team of the US Navy, perform some breath-taking maneuvers just off the coast. They were part of the Sea & Sky Spectacular, an event held annually at Jacksonville Beach. The day could not have been more perfect!

As written in one of my earlier blogs, I grew up in an Air National Guard family. Therefore, I am totally in to everything airplanes, military and patriotic. Wathing the razor-like precision of this team will absolutely give you goosebumps! If you have never seen them, and you have the chance...GO! It is SO worth every minute!
